To illustrate this form of measurement, let us suppose that the Area enclosed
within the square in Fig. 1 of Plate X to be
the plan of a square lot drawn to a scale of say 1 inch to 10 ft., and
that it is required to know the number of cu. yds. of material necessary
to be removed to grade the lot so that its final surface shall be level
and at a determined elevation.
