The method by which any error in the results of measurements with the Polar Planimeter due to irregularities or imperfections in the paper upon which the wheel moves is minimized, has already been explained in a previous chapter.
Attempts to entirely eliminate this source of error and make the accuracy of the instrument independent of the nature of the surface upon which the area to be measured is drawn, has resulted in the production of a class of instruments termed Precision Planimeters, in which this elimination has been successfully accomplished. The importance of these instruments makes a brief description of them desirable in this connection.
